Solar-Powered Fridge

14 Sep

Emily Cummins, 21, came up with a brilliant idea while working on a school project: What if she could invent a solar-powered fridge, which could be used in non-developed countries?

So she did! She developed a portable eco-fridge, that can keep perishable goods cool for days at a temperature around 6ºc.

But the fridge is not just only solar powered, it can also be built from household materials, making it the perfect gadget for Third World countries.

Actually, Emily went to Africa and taught people how to build this eco fridge. So, this invention is already improving thousands of lives.

“A fridge is something that people can’t seem to live without. I wanted to keep it really simple and so I set about researching how we cooled things years ago. The simplest method of cooling something could be seen when you look at how we cool biologically  –  through sweating or evaporation.” Emily Cummins

“The fridge comprises two cylinders  –  one inside the other. The inner cylinder is made from metal but the outer cylinder can be made from anything to hand, including wood and plastic.”

Ingrown Hair | The Solution

29 Aug

I’m writing to express my hate on ingrown hair.

Everyone has ingrown hair. Men and women suffer from this since someone really clever decided that having hair was gross and invented waxing and its “I-remove-hair-without-pain” friends.

There’s nothing to be ashamed about… Well, actually there is!

Brands all over the world should be ashamed! How on earth hasn’t any beauty or pharmaceutical brand created an EFFECTIVE product to get rid of ingrown hair?! Can someone explain this to me?

It’s true that some of them did try, but they all sucked at it! And plus we have to hear all over again: Maybe you should do some exfoliation, or maybe you should moisturize your skin, or maybe you should use our hair removal products, cause they really respect skin,  or maybe you should rub something on said area, or maybe you should stop whining and cover yourself… Well brands, OR MAYBE you could stop lying and start working on some great products, for instance!

Or else, we will prefer spending our money in some high caloric ice cream and some chocolate bar, to eat while seeing perfectly photoshoped models without ingrown hair problems.

People, let’s get mad at brands and do a revolution! LIKE this post and spread the word!! Eventually some brand or scientist will hear us!

If you are a tech nerd and you think you could bring Photoshop to real life, speak up and save us all!

(By the way people, I’m aware that I lied naming this post, but I wanted to feel what those wacky brands feel, when they deceive us. I must admit that I can feel the POWER! Lol)

As Free as my Hair | How to tame it

27 Jun

My hair just can’t be tamed! During winter, summer, spring or whatever… In any occasion, I look like I just came out of the jungle and was attacked by several wild animals. It’s lame!

To solve my problem I have a new product that promises to, not just tame my freaky hair, but to protect it from damage caused by sun, wind, pollution and from comments like: “did you brush your hair today?” or “What happen to your hair?” or “Was it raining in the morning?” or “You know what you should use? Hair spray!”.

I’m gonna start using this product now and, hopefully, in a month I can look like a normal person, instead of a member of some remote Indian tribe.

Stay tuned! I’ll talk about the results in a few weeks.

During that time I would love to hear about any hair product that WORKED for you (in case you HAD the same problem) or if you already used this one.

If you want to complain about your undisciplined hair – Be my guest! Unlike Rihanna, I don’t like to feel like “I’m the only girl in the world”.

IDEA FOR A BEAUTY BRAND: If you want to release a new product which main objective is to tame wild shapeless hair – name it LEASH. Cause it’s exactly what my hair needs and I would totally buy it by that suggestive name! :p

New Perfume

24 May

I’ve been offer a new perfume!

I’m really really picky about perfumes; it takes me ages to choose one. I have to go to different stores, smell everything and try on every single perfume… I hate it sometimes: when I love the fragrance of the perfume on the little paper and hate it in my skin; it looks like the fragrance is totally different.

So you can imagine what I thought when I’ve been offer a new one, it was like Damn! Why a perfume? It could be anything else and I will probably dislike it”. To make things worse, when I opened the box TCHARAM! The bottle looked like it came out of a Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings’ movie… So I thought to myself “just smile, say thank you and think about someone who would love to receive this perfume and give it to that person”.

Floratta Emerald

Fearless, I opened the bottle and sprayed it on my arm, and… Wow! Loved it! Apparently I was wrong (it doesn’t happen a lot :p). The fragrance is so fresh, so “summertime”, but at the same time it can be warm and strong enough to be sexy.

I just wanted to share this with you for 3 simple reasons:

  • You probably looking for a good summer perfume, that’s fresh and strong enough to fight this high temperatures’ weather
  • You should never evaluate things by his “package” – I still think it looks like a magic potion from Harry Potter and I would probably never buy it, by this criteria
  • If you’re convinced by my opinion about it, you can buy it here at Boticario . I guess they ship worldwide (not sure though…if not, try to find stores in your country, they are all over the World)

Looking for the perfect perfume too? Which one do you use?

Spray Tshirt? What!?

10 May

You probably think that fashion won’t go further than new patterns and new designs. Well, think twice, because revolution is coming!!!

Soon we will be spraying ourselves into everything from t-shirts to hats! How cool is that?

Also this cotton fibers’ liquid can be dissolved and used all over again as you want. So if you’re tired of your shirt you can dissolve it and spray a bikini. It’s awesome!

The liquid dries as soon as it hits the skin, the garment can be taken off, washed and re-worn.

“To show science and technology can help fashion designers, I ended up returning to the principles of the earliest textiles such as felt, which were also produced by taking fibers and finding a way of binding them together without having to weave or stitch.” Dr. Torres, Professor of Particle Technology at Imperial College – creator of Fabrican

Old Oil into Candles

27 Apr

The first time that I heard about this new product I was thrilled. I’m that kind of person that freaks out when the cooking oil is overused and has to go to the garbage.  I read once, that one drop of cooking oil pollutes the same water as a human being pollutes is all life. 1 DROP!!! (I’m aware that this is exaggerated, but it scares huh?)

Did you know that just 1 liter of wasted cooking oil can contaminate 1 million liters of water?!

So you gotta love this machine! Oon Home Recycling Solutions is a Lisbon-based company that develops innovative green products.

Oon Candlemaker transforms old cooking oil into fragrant decorative candles! How awesome is this?

You are not just saving the planet by polluting less (reducing), but you’re also recycling and reutilizing oil as candles. And the best part is: The candles have fragrance!

For me this is one of the most (if not the most) creative sustainable gadget of all time!

Fragrances:

  • spicy orange
  • cozy jasmine
  • blueberry smoothie
  • sea lemons
  • handpicked apples
  • sweet coffee cream
  • naked soul (whatever that is)

The Oon Candlemaker is a great product and has an astonishing design. It only costs 199€ and it comes with seven pods (that neutralize the oil smell, and provide color and fragrance to the candles). Check how it works on their website.

1 Watch = 1 Tree planted

27 Apr

Los Angeles based company, WeWood (could it have a funniest name?!), is committed to environment and the health of earth. WeWood crafts wood watches and for each sold product the company plants a tree, thanks to a partnership with American Forests and Global ReLeaf.

The key words of WeWood are: Eco-iconic, eco-minded, non-artificial nor toxic materials and sophisticated sustainability.

WeWood goal: Restore Mother Nature.

This wooden watches are available online, if you want to check it out.

I’m still wondering how will you know if they planted a tree…? And, if they use wood as they main raw material, isn’t it the right thing to do – to plant a tree? If they want to plant a tree so much why they advertise it as kind of its core business?

Do you think the same? Do you like this idea? And what about the watches – cool?

PFO | Bracelet for Women Safety

12 Apr

PFO is a new line of bracelets with embedded GPS and alarm systems.

These Bracelets are mostly built for women. Basically, when you’re in trouble you can pull the bracelet and an alarm is sent to your “shields”. With the basic service you can choose 3 people you trust the most to be your shields, but with the premium service a security firm will be responsible for your protection – G4S.

How does it work?

When you’re in trouble and pull the Bracelet the people you set as your shield will receive a text message with your exact location.

Everyone knows that the world is getting crazy. With the multiple natural disasters and the economic crisis, more and more people are left without their homes, food and, sometimes, without their family. For that reason, many of them find themselves forced to run amuck and attack/steal others as a form of protest or just to survive.

Obviously this is not happening everywhere, but nowadays we should think and care more about our security.

This is a recent project and the bracelets aren’t available or priced yet. However, the black one is available to pre-order for delivery in July 2011.

Melissa Shoes | For Passionate Living

29 Mar

“Looking beautiful. Feeling fabulous. Expressing your individuality. Making ecological choices. These are all hallmarks of passionate living and they are all at the foundation of Melissa fashion shoes.”

Probably you already know MELISSA shoes. They are identifiable from miles away and they are everywhere! But maybe you should know more about these shoes.

Melissa is a Brazilian brand that offers comfortable, colorful, fashionable and trendy plastic shoes.

Facts about Melissa shoes:

  • Made from eco-friendly mono materials
  • Can be recycled
  • Completely cruelty free – no animal testing
  • Apparently they are really confortable and promised that you can walk miles with it, without feeling like someone is eating your feet alive!

“These fashion shoes are truly comfortable and will take you from long days at work to lunch with the girls, all night parties to the most glamorous of red carpet events.”

LOVE THESE!

A lot of Celebs are already using Melissa Shoes:  Kate Perry, Agyness Deyn, Anne Hathaway, Alicia Silverstone, Cate Blanchett, Beth Ditto and Kate Moss.

And the well-known blogger – Chiara

Now, let’s talk about what really matters. The shoes are really beautiful, they look great; they make us beg for summer, BUT are they really comfy as they say?

Cause what I can guess is that some of them are waterproof (duh) and perfect to take to the beach, because they won’t get dirty and all that.  But I can’t imagine walking with some of them… Aren’t they going to suffocate my feet? It’s plastic!!

Anyway, I really like them and all the philosophy behind it (yes… now that’s starting to matter to people). I would like to know your experience about it… this might be my next “investment” for summer :p

Do you own ones? What do you have to say about it?

Which ones do you like?

UPDATE!!!

Well this was an interesting turnaround! This post was about fashion and summer shoes, but in the meanwhile in the comments, the discussion was mainly about ecology! So the question was: How can PVC be eco-friendly?!

Actually that didn’t even crossed my mind, but it’s an interesting question. So I decided to search a little about MELISSA VS ECO-FRIENDLY philosophy.

Here it is was I found:

Eco Citizen: “Melissa’s Shoes are fairtrade and made with nearly zero waste in production. They are also 100% recyclable and made from a specially patented meflex plastic and a non-toxic and breathable PVC.”

Lucky Mag: “The materials now used in the production of their (Melissa’s) shoes are made from 30% recycled PVC, and a portion of sales is donated to the World Vision of Recife.”

Being 100% recyclable you can put them on a recycling bin when you feel like they’re not good enough for you anymore!

Now, I hope I helped somehow and I hope everyone is enlightened about how Melissa is eco-friendly! =)

Thanks for the question and thanks for commenting! :)

DIESEL ♥

7 Mar

Diesel is a hell of a crazy brand! I just love its campaigns, its creativity and its risk taking personality. And Yes. Brands have personality!

This is a photo of its Valentines’ ad, when Diesel released this product. I think the picture talks for itself.

Following its Be Stupid campaign, Diesel launched last week the Diesel Island. This Island is the best place to be! The idea was to create the least fucked up country in the World! Check the video, it’s priceless!

Diesel Island. Land of the stupid. Home of the brave!

This week they striked again and developed a dislike button on facebook. Fans are now able to answer to the question “what wouldn’t you take to a desert island?”, by disliking things on the internet.

 They are just awesome!

Diesel if you’re out there, reading this also-stupid-blog, send a helicopter or a raft and take me to your Island, please!
